In recognition of World Childhood Cancer day 2020, SG Cancer Foundation made a donation of GHC5,000 to Paediatric Oncology Unit at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra on February 17, 2020, towards the treatment and support of children affected by cancer.
The cheque was presented by Dr Henry Broni-Amponsah, Founder and Chairman of the SG Cancer Foundation and received by Professor Lorna Awo Renner, Head of the Paediatric Oncology Unit at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Dr Broni-Amponsah said that the Foundation was touched at finding out that children did not have access to adequate funding for treatment for cancer, and would work towards doing more to support the treatment of childhood cancer in Ghana.
Prof. Renner, in receiving the cheque, said that the funds would go a long way to support children with cancer. She mentioned that a lot of their patients are not able to afford the cost of treatment and/or laboratory investigations to diagnose the disease. She said that most of the patients come long distances from different parts of the country to seek assistance, and since some don’t have a place to stay when they come to Accra, they tend to go back because of the financial and logistical challenges they face. The department is determined to ensure that nobody is turned away because of lack of money and therefore it relies heavily on donations from individuals and organisations.
